The Bible doesn’t explicitly say whether Nicodemus was “saved” in the way we might think of today, but there are several strong indications that he came to a place of faith in Jesus.
Nicodemus’ Encounter with Jesus (John 3:1-21)
Nicodemus first appears in the Gospel of John as a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council. He comes to Jesus at night, showing curiosity and respect by calling Jesus a teacher from God. In this meeting, Jesus explains the concept of being “born again” to Nicodemus, saying, “No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3). This interaction shows that Nicodemus was seeking understanding, though he initially struggled with Jesus’ spiritual teachings.
Nicodemus Defends Jesus (John 7:50-52)
In John 7, we see Nicodemus again, but this time he publicly defends Jesus before the other Pharisees. When the Pharisees are plotting against Jesus, Nicodemus speaks up, asking, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” (John 7:51). Though his defense is subtle, it shows that Nicodemus was leaning toward a more favorable view of Jesus, potentially risking his reputation.
Nicodemus After the Crucifixion (John 19:38-42)
Nicodemus’ most telling action occurs after Jesus’ crucifixion. He helps Joseph of Arimathea prepare Jesus’ body for burial, bringing a large amount of myrrh and aloes—about 75 pounds, an amount typically reserved for royalty (John 19:39). This public act suggests a deep reverence for Jesus, and at a time when Jesus’ followers were scattering, Nicodemus steps forward, risking his standing as a Pharisee. This bold gesture strongly implies a significant commitment to Jesus.
Conclusion: A Sign of Genuine Faith
While the Bible does not directly state that Nicodemus was “saved,” his actions indicate a transformation in his understanding of Jesus. From a Pharisee who approached Jesus in the secrecy of night, he progressed to a man who publicly honored Jesus after His death. These actions suggest that Nicodemus came to believe in Jesus, showing signs of faith and possibly salvation.
Nicodemus’ journey is one of spiritual growth, moving from curiosity to respect and finally to what appears to be a genuine expression of faith.
